Where Have G-Rated Movies and G-Rated Videos Gone? What You Can Do To Get Them Back!

It’s hard to believe how quickly we as Americans have changed in our viewing habits. G-Rated videos and G-Rated DVDs are getting hard to find in the ‘New Releases’ section of your video store or even online. For every 1 G-Rated movie that is created, there are 17 R-Rated movies, even though a recent study (by the Dove Foundation) shows that the G movies generate nearly 8 times more profit. Even the Disney studios, which have produced many great kid-friendly movies in the past, are joining the trend. It is estimated that 3 out of 4 of Disney’s top grossing movies are R-Rated. Let’s take a look at how this has come about and what can be done about it.

movie123

In 1968, as complaints grew louder about the sex, violence and profanity in movies, pressure for a rating system (and a Supreme Court decision) finally forced the creating of the MPAA film rating system. Though new to the USA, a rating system had been in use by other countries for years already. The first rating system consisted of G (all ages admitted), M (parental discretion), R (16 and over unless with adult), and X (17 and over). Confusion regarding the M rating led to the development of the PG (all ages – parental guidance) and the disappearance of the M rating. Around the same time the R rating age was raised to 17 and the X rating to NC-17 (No ‘children’ under 17, later changed to no ‘one’ under 17). NC-17 movies are not shown by most theaters.

As more movies were made that straddled the gap between PG and R ratings, especially for violence (like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), the PG-13 rating was adopted by the MPAA. PG-13 movies allowed for children under 13 to be admitted, but it came with parent warnings.

That brings us to today. Although an estimated 50% of the US population goes to church regularly, and about 5% of the population attends the movie theater regularly, there is still a disproportionate number of horror and violent films being thrust on the public. Even at that, many of the g-rated moves that do make it to the screen are filled with questionable moral content including occultism and characters that promote unhealthy lifestyles. There is a good chance that soon movie ratings will be adversely affected if a character is smoking a cigarette, but still PG movies can contain strong language and drug or sexual implications that could influence young children. So what can parents do to find more movies for children?

First, know what your kids are watching. There are several sources where you can find out information about movies, even detailed information like what exact inappropriate language is said and how often, what disturbing scenes are included, and any sexual situations. Some of these online sites are ScreenIt.com, Kids-in-Mind.com, FamilyStyle.com, or RottenTomatoes.com. There are other sites that focus only on children friendly material and cartoons. Still other companies are taking good movies and extracting foul language and inappropriate scenes. Make the time to watch these shows with your kids and if there is any questionable content that comes up, stop the movie and explain why it is not appropriate. Never pass an opportunity to teach your children about good morals and character after the movie.

How to Download Full Length Movies

People are looking for ways to download full length movies from home, it seems. From the number of online search counts for the words like “download movies online for free”, “how to download DVD movies cheaply” and so on, it suggests that many people want to increase their DVD movie collection but do not wish to spend tons of money while doing so. If you belong to this group of folks, perhaps it is time for you to consider some of the affordable membership sites online that let you download full length movies – as many as you wish for a low one-time fee, not pay per download.

movie123

Where Should You Download Full Length Movies?

The question of course is which sites offer you the best deal for your money. Here are some tips you can apply. The reason why I do not recommend you doing this from free sites is because the downloading can bring you a host of problems such as the risk of downloading malware and viruses onto your computer, legal implications, slow speeds as well as poor quality of the movies.

1. Research online on the different download sites. Nowadays, there are sites that offer lifetime memberships for a flat fee. With the membership, you are entitled to download full length movies, and you do get to unedited and director’s uncut version as well.

2. Go for sites that offer you the latest blockbusters. Make sure that they constantly update their libraries so that you can find the new releases.

3. Check the number of movies available as well as the genre. There are sites that offer both classics as well as the newest movies. Why not choose these so that you have a wider selection to choose from?

4. Check the pricing of each download site. There are quality sites that offer you unlimited movie downloads for less than $39.99. Go for them. Anything more expensive than that is simply too expensive.

5. See if they offer 24/7 customer support. This is ideal because you never know when you need troubleshooting. It is assuring if they are always around to provide assistance.

The Things Movie Web Geeks Don’t Want You To Know

When I first started writing for media outlets four years ago, I never knew how powerful the opinions of movie fans really were. I was astonished to find out that studios fly writers out for free to interview celebrities on set visits. I was even more amazed about the ‘Open Bar’ film industry events, but the biggest thing that surprised me was that web geeks have fans. When I opened my first fan mail 4 years ago, I knew that putting my writing online was going to be fun, challenging, and a great opportunity to build my resume. It was also something I wanted to excel at. After writing for a few years, I soon discovered the tricks of the trade. Readers of popular media outlets get to see the positive things writers get to do. We make friends, we get to travel, and we love to entertain you in the best way we know possible. However, we are human and none of us are perfect….especially movie web geeks. We all mostly share the same flaws and weird quirks that we don’t like to admit, and you will usually find us making excuses for them if they’re pointed out to us. So here are some things that you might like to know about us that we would all like to take to the grave.

movie123

1. WE GET STARSTRUCK

Many people seem to think that online film journalists are very professional and never lose their cool when interviewing someone known in the entertainment industry, but most times we put our game faces on for interviews. A lot of us that write are merely just humble movie geeks that have been given the chance to write for a movie website. Chances are during an interview, the main thought in web geeks heads is wondering if and how they can nonchalantly ask for a picture with the actor/actress afterwards. Actually, from personal experience I have noticed that web writers don’t usually get nervous over the A-list actors. It’s the cult/B-list actors that really get to us. Honestly, I have met a few well known actors, but when I met Greg Nicotero at a convention, I got so flustered and red in the face.

2. WE ARE PRESS WHORES

Yes, we do like seeing our names on popular search engines. However, there are 3 things we all dream of seeing our names on: Movie Posters, t.v. spots, and DVD covers. We will do anything just to get a blurb that will eventually manipulate people into seeing the movie. We might over embellish reviews for the hope that it will be looked at. (We all know there are writers out there that will even flat out lie about horrible movies just to get a good blurb.) We also know the right phrases that will make for a good blurb. We know that movies like being compared to other popular movies. (For example if you see in a review, “It’s (FILL IN THE BLANK movie) meets (FILL IN THE BLANK movie)!” it’s a pre meditated blurb.) Yup, we may deny it, but we have all done this one time or another.

3. WE ARE TERRITORIAL

A lot of us sometimes forget that we are a dime a dozen in this business, and this is evident when you see how territorial some of us can get. See, most of us are just merely hardcore movie fans with an amazing mental capacity to store endless amounts of trivial movie knowledge who like to think we are “film elitists.” This usually comes out when writers from different sites come together for events or festivals. Of course, we usually spend most of the time sharing our views on the latest movie news. However, get a bunch of movie web nerds together long enough, and the conversation is bound to turn into a battle of the wits. (Or “Who’s the biggest virgin?” is what I like to call it.) The once friendly chatter turns into a vicious debate over obscure movies and at some point, someone always ends up mocking a fellow writer for not idolizing a little known cult actor who really is just a glamorized extra in horror films. Since I am a woman, I am usually challenged on my film knowledge every screening or event I go to.

Christian Movie Reviews – Guidelines to Consider

Christian movie reviews are a great tool to help you in your faith walk. Like all media, movies are powerful because of their ability to influence your thoughts and feelings. In Proverbs 4:23, we are advised to guard our hearts, because out of it springs the issues of life. We are also exhorted to meditate on things what is true, noble, lovely, pure, virtuous, praiseworthy and of good report (Philippians 4:8).

movie123

Movie reviews written from a biblical perspective can help you make wise decisions as to what to watch, and can help you prepare yourself spiritually if you choose to watch a feature that is less than noble or pure.

An ideal movie review written for Christians would not only provide a summary of the plot, the characters, and theme but would include information about any potential objectionable elements. This is helpful because everyone has areas of weakness and temptation. According to a principle of martial arts, the best way to fight a temptation is to avoid being tempted in the first place. So, for example, if you have issues with sexual temptation, then watching movies that contain nudity or sexual situations will likely increase your struggle. If you do decide to see the movie, then knowing beforehand about the tempting element will help you be better able to prepare for it.

Another helpful element for a Christian movie review would be to provide an opinion about the movie through the lens of Philippians 4:8. What elements of the movie are true, noble, pure, praiseworthy, and the other elements we are advised to meditate on? Even if the movie does not have an overtly Christian message, there still may be elements that affirm our values. For example, I saw a movie recently on video that illustrated a positive view of marriage and commended remaining faithful to your spouse for life. In my opinion, that made the movie worth watching, even though it had occasional strong language.

Good movie reviews for Christians will also wrap up the article with a final recommendation, a reason to see or a reason to pass. However in the end, every person must decide for themselves what media they will allow into their minds. Movies can be great fun, but remember that they are a form of “amusement”. The word “amusement” means “without thinking.” It’s human to want to escape reality on occasion, but it can cause problems if worldly media has a greater influence on your mind than God’s word. In the end, the one allowed greater reign in your life will eventually have the greater influence on your behavior

The Best Way to Rent Movies Online

There is no better way to rent movies online than to use an online movie rental company. That being accepted by the vast majority of people, what should you be looking for in an online DVD rental business that should persuade you to join it.

movie123

Wide Choice of Videos

First you will want a wide choice of videos: not only a choice of genres, such as Action, Horror, Romance, Sci-Fi and so on, but also a large number of offerings within each genre. This is where an online DVD rental site has an advantage. Being online, it does not have to depend on the limited space of an offline video store to display its range. All online video stores can offer you a massive range to choose from.

Easy to Search

When you rent movies online you have such a wide choice that you need an easy way to search, and an online DVD store can use the power of online local search engines to make it easy for you. Each site has its own search engine that will provide you with a list of movies that conform to any search criteria you use: whether by actor or actress, genre, the movie title or even one or two words within the title, then you will be provided with a list of movies that the online movie rental company has to offer.

Fast Turn-Round

You want a fast turn-round by post. Whereas an offline video store will immediately exchange your video for a new one, a postal service cannot do that. What you should look for when you rent movies online is:

a) First class post both to you and back to them. Postage should be free to you so you don’t have to worry about buying the right stamp for the weight of your DVD, and the envelope should be self-addressed. A Freepost self-addressed envelope is what you should be looking for.

b) You should be able to return your DVDs singly, so that, if you have registered to have 2 or 3 at home at any one time, you can send one back while you watch another. That way, your next video will be on its way

New Pirates of the Caribbean Movie – Another Blockbuster For Johnny Depp?

In June 2010 filming began on a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie but will audiences still have the same appetite to see Johnny Depp returning to play Captain Jack Sparrow? The first three Pirates movies made over one billion dollars from North American audiences but it is interesting to note that the second movie in the series, “Dead Man’s Chest”, made the most of all three films. Why is that?

movie123

When the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie came out in 2003 it was a summertime hit. The movie ended its run with an impressive box office figure of $305 million dollars. Realizing that it had a new franchise on its hands, Walt Disney Pictures immediately ordered two more Pirates of the Caribbean movies to be filmed back to back and released one year apart. The first sequel was “Dead Man’s Chest” which came out in the summer of 2006. That movie made $406 million dollars, $100 million more than the first movie did. But when the third movie came out one year later, “At World’s End”, only grossed $309 million dollars, barely $4 million dollars over what the first Pirates movie made. Why?

One of the theories is that sequels only seem to do better when there is more time spread out between them. This allows audiences to not get accustomed to seeing the same characters over and over again in too short of a time. Back in the golden age of movies Hollywood made sequels very quickly, with some installments appearing several times a year. But this was before the creation of home video and television which now allows people to watch more movies in the comfort of their homes.

The new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is scheduled to arrive in the summer of 2011. That would make it 4 years since the third movie, “At World’s End”, which is a longer time than the gap between the first movie and the second Pirates movie. That is a good indication that people will have missed the Captain Jack character and the new movie could reach the same high grosses as the second movie did.

Great Movies That Have Left Behind Unforgettable Memories

In my younger days I was a movie fanatic and there were practically no good movies that I did not get to see. I made it a point to see any good movie that was released. Of course those were things of the past and today I hardly go to the theater to see movies other than watch one once in a blue moon on television. When we were kids it movies were sheer entertainment and those were the days when the new digital techniques and effects had not yet been discovered. It was toward the fag end of the 1970’s that sci-fiction movies started becoming the order of the day.

123 movies

The great movies that I am talking about are ones like “The Ten Commandments”, “Ben-Hur”, “Gone With The Wind”,, “Helen of Troy”, “Spartacus”, “Julius Caesar”, “Antony and Cleopatra”, “Solomon and Sheba”, “Jason and The Argonauts”, the ever famous Alfred Hitchcock horror movie “Psycho” the list seems endless. Most of the movies that have been mentioned here are ones that have been Oscar award winners and movies like “Ben-Hur” bagged more than five awards in it s time. Those were the days when many Roman and Greek mythological stories were created into all time hit movies of their genre.

In spite of the fact that the movies of yore did not have the sound system or the graphics effects of the movies of today they were simply fantastic creating indelible impressions in our minds as kids. Even today when we get talking, my brother and I nostalgically think about the movies that we had seen together as kids.

Who can forget Clark Gable as Rhett butler and Vivian Leigh as Scarlet Ohara in “Gone With The Wind” and Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd as Ben-Hur and Messalah in Ben-Hur, not to forget Kirk Douglas in the title role that he played in “Spartacus”. Anthony Hopkins with his dual personality in “Psycho” was a runaway hit as the killer who seemed so harmless.

There have been great movies that have been created since then and there have been a plethora of actors and actresses who have made their mark in Hollywood movies, but there are certain things that stay imprinted in your mind and no matter how much better the movies that were produced later were, they still cannot erase the memories of the past.

10 Best Classic Sci-Fi Movies of the ’50s

Are you a black and white B-movie buff like me? No? Well, you oughta be! You’re missing some great movies. Some are so bad they’re good; if only for their entertainment value. And, some of the good ones are great! Either way they’re all classics in my book. Many, many great sci-fi classics came out of this decade, far more than 10. But, I had to choose. So, here are some of my favorites.

123movies free

10. Journey to the Center of the Earth: 1959
This sci-fi adventure follows a team of explorers, (3 men and a woman) down an extinct Icelandic volcano that leads to the center of the earth. Along the way, they encounter floods, dinosaurs, a giant Gila monster and as always, the evil adversary who tries to stop and/or kill them, so he can reach the center first.

At a time when women had little power and independence, this was one of the first movies to depict a woman as a strong and capable member of the team, rather than the helpless damsel in distress. It had great special effects for the time. With major stars like James Mason, Pat Boone and Arlene Dahl, it was heads above the typical sci-fi movie of the decade. I didn’t see the remake.

9. Invaders From Mars: 1953
Scared the be-jesus out of me the first time I saw it! It starts out with young David star-gazing one night from his bedroom window. He sees a flying saucer land in the sand pit near his home. He runs to alert his parents and insists that his father go investigate. His father disappears into the sand pit, and doesn’t return until the next morning…but he’s ‘changed’ somehow. He sees a scar on the back of his father’s neck and realizes something has happened to him.

The nightmare expands as many of the local townspeople are also slowly ‘changing’. No one believes David at first, but he finally convinces a scientist and a lady doctor that something’s very wrong. Together they foil the invasion and save the world. The mummy-like Martians and their disembodied, head-in-a-fishbowl, multi-appendaged leader are especially ‘creepy’. The remakes ok, but I liked this one best.

8. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: 1954
A visually engaging interpretation of the Jules Verne classic, this movie has inspired several movie remakes and a successful TV series. It was the first and only sci-fi movie produced by Walt Disney himself, and one of the genre’s best.

With a star-studded cast including Kirk Douglas, James Mason, and Peter Lorre, it’s the tale of a Naval Officer and his crew who are assigned the task of investigating the disappearances of ships on the high seas by a ‘sea monster’. They soon discover the ‘monster’ is really a submarine-like ship run by the sinister, enigmatic Captain Nemo, who’s one goal in life is to bring peace to the world by destroying all of the world’s war vessels. Great adventure and special effects.

7. The Thing (From Outer Space): 1951
Anyone remember the lawman from Gunsmoke, James Arness? Well, this was his first movie. He plays The Thing, a creature who crash landed in the frozen Arctic some time in the distant past. His ship and frozen body are discovered by a group of research scientists. They cut him out in a block of ice and take him back to the research station where he’s accidentally thawed out.

They soon discover he’s a carnivorous predator when he begins killing researchers and feeding on their blood. ‘It’ is very intelligent and starts sabotaging their research station. Then they learn he’s really a ‘plant’ that on
